# Pipe, profile and angle-iron cutting

Short answer

To assess pipe or profile cutting, provide the cross-section, outer dimensions, wall thickness and drawings of every face to be cut. A straight cut, holes in one wall and a wraparound contour are different tasks. Suitable equipment, workholding, access and operation availability must be confirmed before ordering.

Pipe is hollow stock with a round, square or rectangular section. Angle iron has an L-section and channel a U-section. Thickness alone cannot define a cutting job: length, enclosed walls, access to the feature and clamping space also matter. Send Craftarea a dimensioned drawing and photographs for an existing assembly. Agree the method, operator, finishing and handover terms after review.

## What is the difference between pipe, profile, angle iron and channel?

Profile is a broad term for shaped stock. Round or rectangular pipe is hollow; angle iron has two flanges and channel a U-shaped section. Include full dimensions alongside these names: profiles with the same outer size may have different wall thicknesses or corner radii.

- Stainless / inox / nerzhaveika — common names for stainless steel
- Black metal — often means carbon steel in local trade usage
- Angle iron / уголок — L-profile; channel / швеллер — U-profile

## Single-face features and three-dimensional cuts

A hole on an accessible flat face and a contour around a tube require different preparation. Method selection depends on cutting-head access, workholding and protection of the opposite wall. Internal burrs also matter in closed sections. Show each cut face and its orientation relative to the others.

- Flat bar or T-profile — outline and space for clamping
- Angle iron — identify the flange and distance from the corner
- Channel — account for access restricted by side walls
- Closed tube — working faces, interior space and opposite wall

## When do additional operations need assessment?

A shaped tube end for joining round tubes, a wraparound pattern or coordinated openings on different walls needs suitable three-dimensional processing. Rotary control is one possible approach, but geometry should determine the method. Bending, welding and assembly are separate operations: confirm their availability and who will perform them before ordering.

## How is wall or flange thickness assessed?

Specify the actual wall thickness and material grade. Outer tube diameter is not a substitute for thickness. Review also considers section size, working length, hole diameter and edge distance. A thickness limit established for sheet does not automatically apply to a three-dimensional profile; feasibility is confirmed for the particular drawing.

## Where are cut profiles used?

Typical applications include frames, furniture legs, brackets, gates and railings. For an additional hole in an existing welded frame, provide overall assembly dimensions and photos: access may be restricted. Drawings and joints for loaded components must reflect structural requirements. Acceptance of a prototype and order quantity are agreed separately.

## Information needed for profile cutting

| Section | Show on the drawing | Condition to review |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Flat bar / T | Every flange and the outline | Clamping and cutting-head access |
| Angle iron (L) | Both flanges, corner and openings | Corner clearance and datum |
| Channel (U) | Wall heights and working face | Internal access and length |
| Square tube | Sides, wall and relation between views | Opposite wall and internal burrs |
| Round tube | Diameter, wall and developed contour | Angular position and processing method |

## How It Works

1. 1

   ### Identify the section

Provide outer dimensions, length, material and wall. For example, 40×40×3mm describes a section, not a confirmed cutting capacity.
2. 2

   ### Show every cut face

Mark openings and positions in DXF, DWG, AI or PDF; agree working-file preparation from a sketch separately.
3. 3

   ### Check feasibility

Confirm workholding, head access, wall protection and required operations.
4. 4

   ### Agree scope and price

Specify quantity, stock source, cutting, edge finishing and inspection in the quote.
5. 5

   ### Arrange handover

Agree timing, packaging for long parts, and collection or delivery terms in advance.

## Frequently Asked Questions

Can round pipe be laser cut?

The method depends on the section and contour. A single-wall opening and a wraparound cut may need different equipment or workholding; feasibility must be confirmed from the drawing.

What thickness of angle iron or channel can be cut?

Provide grade, flange thickness, outer dimensions and opening positions. Feasible thickness depends on the method and geometry and is agreed before ordering.

Can both walls of a tube be cut at once?

That depends on the drawing and technology. With access from one side, the risk of damaging the opposite wall needs review; different workholding, separate operations or three-dimensional processing may be needed.

How long does a cut pipe or profile part take?

Timing depends on drawing readiness, material, quantity and operations. Include your preferred date in the enquiry and obtain a confirmed schedule before ordering.

What is the minimum order?

Send the quantity required, including any prototype request. Acceptance, preparation charges and batch terms are agreed after assessment.

Does cutting include bending or welding?

List bending, welding and assembly separately. Availability, operator, joint requirements and cost must be confirmed in advance; a cutting quotation does not automatically include them.

What file is needed for a pattern in pipe?

DXF, DWG, AI or PDF should show closed outlines, dimensions and every working face. Wraparound patterns also need angular positions and a clear relationship between views.

What determines pipe cutting price in Tbilisi?

Material, wall thickness, section, working length, clamping, cutting complexity and quantity. Describe finishing and transport separately so the agreed price covers the complete scope.
