# Copper and brass cutting and engraving

Short answer

Cutting copper or brass creates the outline; engraving adds surface text or a logo. Alloy, thickness, finish and coating determine the assessment needed. Confirm material acceptance, method, sample, quantity and finishing with Craftarea in advance; the material name alone does not guarantee feasibility.

Copper’s red-pink tone and brass’s golden colour are used for plaques, awards, keychains and interior accents. Brass is a copper-zinc alloy; bronze is a different material. Reflection from polished surfaces and thermal conductivity complicate laser processing. This page explains the choice between cutting and engraving; equipment, thickness and service availability must be agreed before ordering.

## What's the difference between copper and brass?

Copper (Cu) is a pure metal — soft, an excellent conductor of both heat and electricity, red-pink in tone. Brass is a copper-zinc alloy, known locally as "latun"; it is harder and reads gold. Tombak is not a synonym but a specific high-copper grade of brass. Both are routinely confused with bronze, which is copper plus tin and a different material entirely. All three are non-ferrous metals, valued for a warmth that carbon and stainless steel cannot reproduce.

- Copper (Cu) — red-pink, soft, highly conductive
- Brass (CuZn) = latun — golden, harder; tombak is a high-copper grade of it
- Bronze (CuSn) — copper plus tin, a separate material
- In Georgian, ლითონი and მეტალი both simply mean metal

## What thickness of copper and brass can be laser cut?

Copper and brass processing depends on alloy, coating, reflectivity and thermal conductivity. Polished and matte sheet cannot be assigned one guaranteed thickness limit. Send the material grade, thickness, surface photo and drawing. Cutting feasibility and edge requirements should be confirmed from those details, with a sample assessment where needed.

- Exact alloy grade
- Thickness and sheet dimensions
- Surface coating or sample
- Drawing and required tolerance

## When does engraving beat cutting?

Engraving works on the surface rather than through the full sheet thickness. A thick object may therefore accept a logo or text if its dimensions, shape, coating and placement in the machine are suitable. A through-cut outline requires a separate feasibility assessment.

## Where are copper and brass used?

These materials are often chosen for decorative plaques, awards, numbers, keychains and ornaments. Cutting an outline and engraving fine text produce different results. Specify colour, dimensions, environment and quantity, including a sample if needed. Confirm feasibility and minimum quantity after assessment.

- Badges and award plates
- Door nameplates and apartment numbers
- Personalised keychains and souvenirs
- Decorative ornaments and interior accents

## Which operations need separate confirmation?

Through-cutting, engraving, bending, machining and polishing are different operations, each with its own equipment and surface requirements. List all stages and agree availability, operator and inspection of the result for each in advance.

- Cutting: assess contour and thickness
- Engraving: assess surface and part positioning
- Bending, polishing or coating: separate agreement

## How much does copper or brass cutting cost?

Assessment needs the contour or inscription, alloy, thickness, surface, quantity and final finish. Cutting and engraving involve different work, with cost determined by the particular task. Agree material sourcing, artwork and any sample separately; the quote should specify the complete scope, batch terms and timing.

## Why do copper and brass change colour over time?

Exposed to air, copper and brass oxidise and gradually darken or develop a green-brown patina — a natural chemical process, not a defect. To keep a bright, new look, the piece needs a clear lacquer coat or periodic cleaning with a soft polish. If you prefer an aged, patinated look, simply leave the metal alone. Engraved lines often gain contrast as this happens, because patina collects faster in the recessed marks.

## Non-ferrous metal assessment — confirm thickness for the specific job

| Material or surface | What to provide | Purpose |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Copper | Grade, thickness and surface photo | Select cutting or engraving method |
| Brass | Alloy and desired colour | Agree material and result |
| Polished surface | Visible side and coating description | Assess reflection and sample requirements |
| Oxidized or painted | Coating composition or documentation | Check processing suitability |
| Bronze | Exact alloy and drawing | Separate technical assessment |

## How It Works

1. 1

   ### Artwork

Provide DXF, SVG, AI or vector PDF; agree file preparation for a sketch separately.
2. 2

   ### Material and colour

Identify copper or brass, alloy, thickness, finish and coating.
3. 3

   ### Cut or engrave

Distinguish the through-cut outline from surface marks and label both in the drawing.
4. 4

   ### Sample and terms

Where needed, agree a trial sample, final edge, quantity and timing.
5. 5

   ### Handover and care

Clarify packaging, delivery and requirements for preserving the chosen finish.

## Frequently Asked Questions

Are copper and brass the same material?

No. Copper (Cu) is a pure metal with a red-pink tone, while brass is a copper-zinc alloy with a golden tone, called "latun" in Georgian. Bronze, frequently confused with brass, is copper plus tin and is a third, separate material.

Can you cut bronze as well?

Send the exact bronze alloy, thickness and finish with the drawing. Copper or brass capability does not automatically apply to bronze; agree feasibility and any sample separately.

Why doesn't copper cut as easily as steel?

The reflectivity and thermal conductivity of copper and brass affect laser processing. Acceptable thickness must be checked for the particular alloy and surface; steel cutting capability does not automatically apply to these materials.

Can you cut oxidised or painted copper?

Coating and oxidation need prior assessment. Send photos and any coating documentation; before processing, agree whether it is removed or retained and whether the method is suitable.

Can you engrave without cutting through?

Engraving works on the surface rather than through the full sheet thickness. A thick object may therefore accept a logo or text if its dimensions, shape, coating and placement in the machine are suitable. A through-cut outline requires a separate feasibility assessment.

How much does copper or brass cutting cost?

Price depends on operation, alloy, thickness, contour or inscription, quantity and finishing. Artwork and a surface photo help define the scope; agree the final quote before ordering.

Is there a minimum order?

Minimum quantity depends on the material and operation. Include a single sample in the request if needed, then confirm availability and file-preparation terms in advance.
