# Menu Printing

Short answer

Menus are printed on heavy stock and are normally laminated, to protect against grease and moisture. Single-sheet, folded and multi-page formats are available. Where prices change often, a replaceable-page system or a QR menu is useful.

A menu is one of the rare printed products handled daily by dozens of people with wet and greasy hands — and that governs every technical decision in producing one. The second governing factor is price changes: a menu that goes out of date in three months calls for a completely different construction from one that lasts a year. This page addresses both factors and shows which format suits which situation.

## Lamination — why it is mandatory

Printing a menu without lamination is almost always a mistake. A greasy finger leaves a translucent mark on paper that never cleans off; a spilled drink swells the sheet; and everyday handling frays the edges within weeks. A laminated menu wipes clean with a cloth and holds its appearance for months. Matte lamination is usually better than gloss, because restaurant ceiling lighting reflects off a glossy surface and makes text harder to read — especially in low light.

- Greasy fingers — translucent marks on paper
- Spilled drinks — the sheet swells
- Laminated menus wipe clean
- Matte lamination — no glare

## Format by how often prices change

This is the decision that most affects annual cost. If the menu is stable and changes once a year, a multi-page bound menu is the best choice — it presents best. If prices or dishes change often, a system with replaceable sheets is more rational: spiral or clip binding where only the changed page is reprinted. A third option is a single sheet in a folder or frame, the cheapest to refresh. Seasonal offers are often handled with a separate insert.

- Stable menu — multi-page, firmly bound
- Frequent changes — replaceable sheets
- Maximum flexibility — single sheet in a frame
- Seasonal dishes — a separate insert

## Typography and legibility under restaurant lighting

The main constraint on menu typography is lighting: in restaurants, especially in the evening, light is far weaker than in the office where the menu was designed. That means 8 pt type that reads on screen is practically unreadable in low light. Dish names want at least 10-11 pt and descriptions 9-10 pt, and light weights are best avoided entirely. Contrast matters too: light text on a dark background reads worse in low light than the reverse.

## Menu formats

| Format | Updating | Presentation | Typical use |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Single sheet, laminated | Simple — reprint | Medium | Cafes, fast service |
| Folded (2-3 panels) | Reprint | Good | Small menus |
| Spiral bound | Swap a page | Good | Frequently changing menus |
| Multi-page bound | Full reprint | High | Stable, premium |
| Single sheet in a frame | Cheapest | Medium | Daily specials |
| Bar menu | Separate | Medium | Drinks, small format |

## Frequently Asked Questions

Is a QR menu better than print?

They do not replace each other, they complement. A QR menu updates instantly and cheaply, but some guests prefer print and using a phone is not comfortable in every situation. A common solution is a printed menu plus a QR sticker on the table for detailed or seasonal information.

Which format would you recommend for a cafe?

If the menu is small and prices change often — single sheet laminated, or folded. It refreshes cheaply and resists grease. A multi-page bound menu is justified when there are many dishes and the menu is stable.

How do I protect a menu from grease?

Lamination is the only reliable route. A laminated surface wipes clean with a damp cloth and grease leaves no mark. Unlaminated paper absorbs grease and the stain is permanent.

Must I reprint the whole menu when prices change?

If it is firmly bound, yes. That is exactly why, when prices change often, a replaceable-sheet system should be chosen from the start: spiral or clip binding where only the changed page is reprinted.

Should the bar menu be separate?

Usually yes. A drinks menu is often separate and smaller, because it is used at a different moment and updates separately — drinks ranges are typically more stable than the kitchen's.

How many copies should I print?

A practical guide is more than the number of tables, because menus get damaged and lost. Keeping a reserve beats printing a small top-up run later, which is disproportionately expensive.
