# Soft-Touch (Velvet) Lamination on Business Cards

Short answer

Choose soft-touch for a tactile effect, then compare it with ordinary matte on the same stock. Check handling marks, rubbing and text legibility. The particular film determines writing behaviour and compatibility with additional finishing; the soft-touch name alone does not establish those properties.

A screen cannot communicate the feel of a soft-touch surface. A small physical sample with the actual design is more useful: the same treatment can look different over dark ink, light colours and open areas. Choose it for a specific tactile purpose rather than an assumed improvement to every card.

Mark assessment

Dark and light areas separately

Combination

Compatibility of the actual film

## Assess a sample in ordinary handling

Handle the sample, view it in angled light and inspect it after gentle contact with another card. The goal is to assess noticeable marks and feel, not to damage it artificially. Results from one film do not apply to every soft-touch product; record the chosen material or sample reference.

## Plan a selective accent

If you want a glossy logo or metallic accent, define its area and position first, then check the finishing system against the film. A dark background may increase visual contrast, but decorative treatment should not compromise small contact text or QR readability.

## When another surface may work better

Test the pen first if appointment dates will be added regularly. A film can change the natural texture when paper feel is the main design feature. Compare soft-touch and matte as separate specifications in the quote instead of assuming one stock weight or price relationship suits every order.

## Soft-touch evaluation

| Item | Check |
| --- | --- |
| Feel | Compare with matte on the same stock |
| Dark background | Visibility of marks and fine scuffs |
| Writing | Pen, drying and smear test |
| Accent | Specified varnish or foil system |

## Frequently Asked Questions

Are velvet and soft-touch the same term?

Here both describe a soft tactile finish. Products can differ between manufacturers, so compare the actual sample as well as its name.

Is 350 gsm mandatory?

No. Suitability depends on thickness, stiffness and production compatibility. Weight alone does not determine the finished card’s feel.

Can I write on soft-touch?

Test the intended pen on the specific film. If writing is essential, state that requirement before choosing the material.

Is foil or spot UV automatically compatible?

No. Check the actual film and finishing system. The appearance of an accent and its adhesion are separate questions.
