# Business Card Production

Short answer

A business-card production brief should identify who checks the text, who prepares the artwork and which version is approved for print. Technical preflight, design work and a physical proof are different tasks; record their scope and any charges separately.

Sending a file is not the same as authorising a production version. A usable order records the finished product, a named approver and one final file. This makes revisions, quantity changes and the handover check traceable instead of relying on scattered messages.

## Separate artwork from source materials

A logo, contact text and a reference image are inputs for design, not a finished print file. Even a supplied PDF needs checks for dimensions, fonts and both faces. When commissioning design or corrections, agree the number of concepts, revision scope and deliverable files instead of assuming they are included in printing.

## Give each approval a defined purpose

Copy approval checks names, numbers and links; preflight checks technical suitability; a physical proof evaluates the agreed material or visual result. An on-screen PDF cannot establish the feel of paper. Specify whether a requested proof is intended to assess colour, legibility, dimensions or a finishing effect.

## Control revisions and check the delivery

Send a revised file with a distinct version name and explicitly replace the previous approval. A change after production starts can require new preparation. At handover, check each person’s details, quantities, front/back direction and agreed finishing. State packing requirements in advance rather than assuming a fixed number per pack.

## Frequently Asked Questions

Does preflight include design?

Not automatically. Checking dimensions or fonts is different from creating a layout, logo or copy. Agree the work included before production.

Is a proof always included?

No. Its type, purpose, cost and effect on timing must be agreed. A digital preview is not equivalent to a physical proof.

Is quantity enough for a repeat order?

Reconfirm file availability and version, contact details, stock and finishing. A previous order does not guarantee unchanged stock or indefinite file retention.

Who checks the phone number and email?

The customer’s approver should verify the final contact details. A technically valid PDF can still contain an incorrect number or address.
