# Barcode and Inventory Stickers

Short answer

Barcode and inventory labels can carry unique numbers linked to an asset or stock system. Specify the expected use period, surface and cleaning conditions so the code remains readable and the adhesive can be selected appropriately; no fixed multi-year life is assumed.

Inventory labels need reliable identification and a material system suited to the item. This page covers variable numbering, code layout and scanner checks, plus the surface and wear conditions to discuss before choosing the label.

## Sequential numbering

The defining feature of inventory stickers is that each one differs — each carries its own number and a matching barcode. Digital printing handles this easily: we take a list of numbers (or a range, 1001 to 1500 for instance) and each sticker prints with unique data. What matters is fixing the number format in advance — prefix, digit count, code type — because it has to match your accounting system.

- Each sticker is unique
- A range or a list — both work
- Number format is fixed in advance
- Code and human-readable number printed together

## Barcode technical requirements

A barcode, like a QR code, needs a quiet zone — clear space to its left and right. That space is what tells the scanner where the code begins and ends; its absence is the most common reason a code fails to read. The second requirement is height: a very short barcode gives the scanner no tolerance for angle. The third is contrast: a black code on a white or light background. A coloured background or metallised material makes scanning considerably harder.

- Quiet zone either side — mandatory
- Adequate height — for angle tolerance
- Black code on a light field
- Metallised backgrounds break scanning

## Material and durability

State the surface, cleaning routine, abrasion and planned service period. Paper, film and specialist label stocks have different grades; no one-year failure rule applies to all paper labels. Check adhesive suitability on the actual item and confirm readability after representative handling or cleaning.

## Inventory sticker configuration

| Use | Material | Lamination | Numbering |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Office equipment | Vinyl | Yes | Sequential |
| Warehouse racking | Vinyl | Yes | Sequential |
| Furniture / fixed assets | Vinyl | Yes | Sequential |
| Temporary tracking | Paper | No | Sequential |
| Product barcode | Paper or vinyl | By product | One code per run |

## Frequently Asked Questions

How should I send the list of numbers?

An Excel or Google Sheets file with the numbers in one column is easiest. Or simply state a range — 'INV-1001 to INV-1500' — and we will generate them.

Which code type should I choose?

That depends on your accounting system, which dictates the format your scanner reads. If no system has been chosen yet, a QR code is more flexible because an ordinary phone can read it.

Should the sticker tear on removal?

For inventory work that is often exactly what you want — a tamper-evident sticker breaks apart on removal, making it obvious the item was moved. Tell us at order if you need that behaviour.

Will it bond to wood or concrete?

Standard adhesive bonds weakly to rough, porous surfaces. In that case either a stronger adhesive material is needed, or the sticker should sit on a smooth area — a metal plate, for instance.

What is the minimum size for a barcode?

It depends on the code type and how much data it carries. General rule: the more characters, the wider the code. We test a printed proof with a real scanner before the run.

Can the sticker carry a logo too?

Yes, a company logo and name are normally added alongside the number and code. The only rule is that the logo must not intrude into the code's quiet zone.
