# Clear Stickers

Short answer

Clear stickers are printed on transparent self-adhesive film, letting the background show through so the artwork appears to float. Solid colour requires a white underbase, because CMYK inks are semi-transparent. They are used on shop windows, glass and bottles.

The whole point of a clear sticker is that no white rectangle shows — the logo or text appears directly on the glass, as if printed there. That effect is most in demand on shop windows, drink bottles and glass doors. Transparent material does raise two technical questions that must be settled in advance: how solid colour is achieved, and which side the sticker will be applied from. This page answers both.

## The white underbase — why it is needed

CMYK inks are semi-transparent: they are designed to be laid on white paper, and it is the paper's whiteness that gives colour its density. Transparent film offers no such backing, so colours come out pale and ghostly — especially against a dark background. The fix is to lay down a white underbase before printing, only where solid colour is needed. This must be marked as a separate layer in the artwork. A logo on white underbase with a transparent background around it is exactly the combination that produces the desired effect.

- CMYK inks are semi-transparent
- White underbase — for solid colour
- A separate layer in the artwork
- Used selectively — solid logo, clear background

## Outside or inside — decide before ordering

A sticker can be applied to glass two ways, and this determines the print direction. Outside application is the ordinary case: the print reads normally and the adhesive is on the back. For inside application the sticker goes on the interior face of the glass and reads from outside — which requires the print to be mirrored with the adhesive on the printed face. The advantage of inside application is that the sticker is protected from weather, vandalism and abrasion. This decision must be made before ordering; changing it later means reprinting.

- Outside — normal print, adhesive on the back
- Inside — mirrored print, adhesive on the printed face
- Inside application protects from weather
- Direction must be set before printing

## Frosted film — the etched-glass effect

Besides gloss clear film there is a matte, semi-transparent variant that produces a frosted-glass effect. It transmits light while blurring the view — which is why it is often used on office glass partitions, meeting rooms and bathroom doors, where privacy is needed without losing light. A logo or pattern can be printed on this material, or conversely the logo area can be left clear, which gives an even more elegant result.

## Transparent material options

| Material | Effect | Typical use |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Clear gloss | Fully transparent, with sheen | Bottles, product labels |
| Clear matte | Transparent, no glare | Shop windows, glass doors |
| Frosted film | Semi-transparent, blurred | Office partitions, privacy |
| With white underbase | Solid colour on a clear field | Logos on glass |
| Mirrored print | Inside application | Shop windows from within |

## Frequently Asked Questions

What happens without the white underbase?

Colours stay transparent and pale — sometimes a desirable effect (a light tint or watermark), but usually not for a logo. Applied to a dark background, a sticker without underbase is practically invisible.

How do I decide which side to apply from?

If the glass is accessible from outside and nothing will damage the sticker, outside is simpler. If the window faces the street and weather or vandalism is a risk, inside is better. What matters is deciding before printing.

Can white text be printed on a clear sticker?

Yes, using the white underbase — in that case the white layer itself forms the text and no colour is laid over it. This is one of the most effective uses on glass.

Will a clear label work on a bottle?

Clear film can suit a bottle when the adhesive and printed construction match the glass or plastic, curve and condensation conditions. Test a sample on the actual container; transparency alone does not establish water resistance.

Which material suits a glass partition?

Frosted-effect film — a semi-transparent material that transmits light while blurring the view. A logo can be printed on it, or conversely left clear against a frosted field.

Will bubbles show during application?

Follow the selected film and adhesive application instructions. Clean the compatible surface and confirm whether dry or wet application is permitted; soapy water is not suitable for every adhesive or air-release film. Large or complex graphics may need an experienced installer.
