# QR Code Stickers

Short answer

Size a QR sticker for the encoded data, module size, print quality and intended scanner or phone. Keep a clear four-module quiet zone on all sides, preserve contrast and test a printed sample at the actual reading distance. No universal 2 cm size guarantees a successful scan.

A QR code sticker has exactly one job: to scan on the first attempt. That sounds simple, but in practice codes often fail to read, and almost always for the same four reasons: too small, insufficient contrast, a lost quiet zone, and inversion (a light code on a dark background). This page addresses all four with concrete figures and describes how we test a code before printing, so a whole run does not turn out useless.

## Size and distance — how they relate

Overall QR size follows its symbol version and module size, plus the quiet zone. The encoded data, printing resolution and scanner capability matter alongside distance and lighting. Avoid a fixed distance-divided-by-ten rule as a guarantee. Use the intended phone or scanner to test a final-size printed sample in the actual setting.

- Confirm the final encoded link or data
- Keep a clear four-module quiet zone
- Select module size for printing and scanning
- Test final-size samples at the intended distance

## Contrast, inversion and the quiet zone

A scanner reads a code through contrast: dark modules on a light field. Inversion — a light code on a dark background — works on some phones and not others, so we avoid it unless the design specifically demands it. The second critical element is the quiet zone: clear space around the code, four module widths wide. If the sticker edge or nearby text crowds the code, the scanner cannot tell where the code ends. That is the single most common reason an otherwise correct code fails to read.

- Dark code on light field — most reliable
- Inversion — does not work on every phone
- Quiet zone: four module widths all round
- Edge or text too close — scanning fails

## Material and glare

Match the material and adhesive to the surface, cleaning and handling. Glare can interfere with scanning, so compare finish options under the actual lighting. Matte finish may help reduce reflections, but it cannot compensate for every size, contrast or data problem. Recheck the printed code after any protective finish.

## QR code size by placement

| Placement | Scan distance | Sizing check | Material |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Restaurant table | 20-30 cm | Test final code with intended scanner and distance | Vinyl, matte |
| Product packaging | 20-30 cm | Test final code with intended scanner and distance | Paper or vinyl |
| Indoor wall / poster | 50 cm | Test final code with intended scanner and distance | Paper |
| Shop window | 1 m | Test final code with intended scanner and distance | Vinyl or clear film |
| Outdoor advertising | 2 m+ | Test final code with intended scanner and distance | Laminated vinyl |

## How It Works

1. 1

   ### Receive or generate the code

You send a finished vector code, or give us the link and we generate one.
2. 2

   ### Technical check

We verify size, contrast, quiet zone and module weight for the intended scanning distance.
3. 3

   ### Test scan

We scan the code on screen and then from a printed proof — it must read at both stages.
4. 4

   ### Printing and lamination

Printing on the chosen material, then matte lamination to avoid glare.
5. 5

   ### Final check

We spot-check the finished run by scanning with at least two different phones.

## Frequently Asked Questions

I have no code — can you create one?

Yes. Send the link or the information the code should carry and we will generate a vector code at the correct size with a proper quiet zone.

Can the code use brand colours?

It can, as long as contrast stays sufficient — a dark brand colour on a light field usually works. A light-coloured code or a low-contrast combination breaks scanning. We test before printing either way.

Can a logo sit in the middle of the code?

An overlaid logo changes the symbol and can reduce readability. Error correction is not a universal safe logo-area percentage. Prefer an unobstructed code; if branding inside it is required, validate the exact generated symbol and final printed sample with the intended devices.

Why does my table code fail to scan?

Check the destination link, contrast, quiet zone, module size, printed quality and glare under the actual lighting. Increasing size or changing finish may help, but test the corrected sample rather than assuming a 3 cm size solves every problem.

Would a dynamic QR code suit you?

If the link may change later (a seasonal menu, for instance), a dynamic code is better — the address encoded in it stays fixed while the destination can be changed later without reprinting the stickers.

The run is printed and the code does not work — what now?

Check whether the code itself is unreadable or its destination link is unavailable. Compare the finished label with the approved sample, then agree a correction if needed. A pre-production scan reduces risk but does not guarantee that every future phone, lighting condition or destination link will work.
