Construction and pocket

A folder is cut and folded from a single sheet of board — the pocket is part of it rather than a separately glued element. There can be one pocket (on the right inside, the most common) or two (on both sides, when documents need separating into groups). Pocket height determines how securely documents are held: too shallow and sheets slip out, too tall and it covers the document. Board weight is critical — a folder in thin board bends under the weight of documents and reads as cheap.

The business card slit

Two small slits on the pocket holding a business card is the detail that adds almost nothing to cost while noticeably improving the folder's function: the card no longer gets lost among the documents and is visible the moment the proposal is opened. The slit must be sized exactly to the card — if your card is not the standard 90x50 mm, say so in advance. In practice this one detail often decides whether your card survives the meeting.

Finishing: what works on a folder

A folder is a large flat surface, so finishing shows far more than on a business card. Matte lamination is the most practical: it gives a velvety look and does not hold fingerprints, which matters because folders are carried by hand. Gloss lamination intensifies colour but shows prints. Spot UV on a logo over a matte field is very effective across a large surface. Foiling belongs to the premium segment and gives maximum effect on a dark folder.
