Shop Window Graphics
Short answer
Shop windows are dressed with vinyl film: clear material for logos and text, frosted film for privacy, and perforated film for large images while preserving the view from inside. Application can be from outside or inside.
A shop window is a business's most valuable advertising space — you already own it, it works every day, and it charges no rent. Which is exactly why overloading it is the most common mistake: a window covered entirely in stickers either darkens the interior or tells passers-by nothing, because nothing can be read. This page covers which material suits which purpose and how to plan a window that actually works.

Three materials and their purposes
Clear vinyl is the most common: logo and text appear directly on the glass with no white background, and the window stays open. Frosted film is semi-transparent — it transmits light while blurring the view, used on office partitions, meeting rooms and the lower part of a window where privacy is needed. Perforated film is covered in tiny holes: from outside it shows a full image, while from inside the view is preserved — the only way to cover a large window fully without darkening the interior.
- Clear — logo and text, window stays open
- Frosted — privacy, light retained
- Perforated — full image + view from inside
- White underbase — for light-coloured elements
What belongs in a shop window
A passer-by reads a window in two or three seconds, so no more than three blocks belong there. Priority: logo or name (so the business is identified), what it does (if the name does not say), and one practical detail — opening hours or a social handle. Price lists, detailed menus and long text do not work on a window, because reading them requires stopping. One exception: opening hours and a phone number at eye level on the door — people look for those deliberately and read them close up.
- Three information blocks maximum
- Logo → what you do → one contact
- Prices and menus do not read on glass
- Door-level opening hours — the exception, read close up
Outside or inside application
This decision must be made before printing, because it determines the print direction. Outside application is simpler and possible with any material. Inside application — where the sticker goes on the interior face and reads from outside — requires mirrored printing and special material with adhesive on the printed face. Its advantage is that the graphic is protected from weather, abrasion and damage, which matters for a window facing the street. If the window is high or hard to reach from outside, inside application is often the only practical option.
