Specify foil by its accent area, desired appearance and background, then establish the suitable process. Hot stamping uses a die, but not every foiling method has the same tooling requirement. Confirm the method before assuming setup cost, available colours or reproduction limits.

“Gold” can mean a printed colour simulation, a specialised metallic ink or foil. These produce different appearances. A reference viewed in different lighting is more useful than an on-screen gold colour value, especially when the intended effect is reflective rather than simply yellow or brown.

Separate setup from run cost

With hot stamping, die preparation is a distinct setup cost. Other methods can use different preparation. Compare 100 and 500 copies with the same accent specification and identify the setup component. Foiling both sides adds work, but does not automatically double the total card price.

Check shapes and gaps

Align the accent file with the colour artwork in size and position. Review gaps and letter counters as well as fine lines. A universal point-size minimum cannot describe every typeface and process. Identify the most demanding small detail for assessment rather than approving only a large logo preview.

Check the background and practical use

Adhesion depends on stock, film and the selected system. Reflection looks different on dark and light backgrounds; contact details must remain legible on both. Test any metallic QR treatment or keep the code in a separate high-contrast area. A decorative sample alone is not a durability guarantee.

Can CMYK gold replace foil?

It can simulate the colour but does not reproduce foil reflection in the same way. Specialised metallic ink is another option whose availability and result require separate assessment.

Are foil colours always in stock?

Confirm the exact colour and effect before ordering. A reference photograph does not establish continuous availability of that material.

Does foil always bond to lamination?

No. Compatibility depends on the film and foiling system. Agree a trial sample and evaluation where needed.

Can the whole card be metallic?

An overall metallic surface and a selective foil accent are different specifications. Describe the intended result first so the suitable material and method can be assessed.
